A NYU Stern vanity email address is an email alias (or nickname) that allows you to send and receive messages to an alternate email address. Messages sent to either your regular Stern email address or your Stern vanity email address will both be delivered to your Gmail@Stern account. Your vanity email address does NOT replace your Stern ID as your username for signing into Stern services. You can think of your vanity email as a nickname for your Stern Gmail.
These instructions are for requesting a vanity email address through SIMON. Your vanity email may not be in the traditional format, <firstname.lastname@stern.nyu.edu>. If this is the case, then it may have been previously requested by someone else with a similar name.
Log into SIMON using your NYU Email Address.
Click on Account Info > Vanity Email Address in the menu.
You will see a selection of vanity email addresses you can choose from. (To view more options, click ‘See More.’) Once you have made your selection, you can hit ‘Submit.’
Requesting a vanity email address through the Stern Service Desk
If you are unable to request a particular vanity email address directly through SIMON using the steps above, contact the Stern IT Service Desk via email at servicedesk@stern.nyu.edu to make your request. Include the following information in your email message:
Stern ID
Desired vanity email address
Short description of why you are requesting this address
If you have previously activated a vanity email address, please include the following in your message:
"I understand that by changing my vanity email address, I will no longer be able to use my current personal address, [your personal address] , to send or receive email messages - messages sent to this address will receive bouncebacks, or may be delivered to another Stern account if the email address is reassigned".
If you would like to use your <firstname.lastname@stern.nyu.edu> but would like to change how your name appears on your Stern ID and Google Apps@Stern account, you can submit a request for an official name change with the NYU Registrar. After your name has been officially changed, you should be able to activate your updated vanity address by following the instructions above.
Your vanity email address may take up to 24 hours to become active. Any messages sent to your vanity email address before it is active will result in bounceback messages, so it is advised to confirm that the account is active before giving out your vanity email address. Send a test email from an email account other than your Gmail@Stern account.
