Adding Nicknames to Gmail and Google+

Add a nickname to Gmail

You can change the name that's linked to your Gmail address, but not the email address itself.

  1. Open Gmail on a computer.
  2. At the top right, click the gear Settings.
  3. Select Settings.
  4. Click the Accounts tab.
  5. In the “Send mail as:” section, locate the email address you'd like to edit.
  6. Click edit info next to the address.
  7. In the “Name:” section, specify what you’d like your name to be and click Save changes.

Add a nickname to Google+


  1. Open the Google+ app Google+ icon > touch your photo in the top left corner.
  2. Touch the menu icon/button  > Edit name.
  3. Touch More options > touch Nickname.
  4. Type the name you want to add > choose how you want your name to show on your profile > Save in the top right corner.


  1. Open Google+ and select Profile from the drop-down menu in the top left corner. Profile
  2. Click on your name > click More options > click the “Nickname” box and enter your nickname.
  3. Click the drop-down menu next to “Display name as” and choose your preferred option.
  4. Click Save in the lower right corner of the box.

Mobile web

You can’t add a nickname on mobile web just yet. Please use the Google+ app or a desktop computer.


  1. Open the Google+ app Google+ icon > touch the menu icon in the upper left corner. 
  2. Touch your picture at the top of the screen > touch the gear icon in the top right corner. 
  3. Touch Edit name > More options.
  4. Touch the box that says “Nickname” > enter your nickname.
  5. Under “Display name as,” touch the dot to the left of your preferred name > Save in the top right corner.

To use your nickname for your Stern personal email address, please contact the Stern IT Helpdesk with your preferred name.
